SCANTECH was the first company to introduce this technology twelve years ago and is still keeping its leadership position.

Correctly applied, Low Energy X-Ray Transmission Technology offers a combination of unique advantages for a wide variety of applications. Low Energy X-Ray Transmission is the best and most efficient technology for automatic die control. For example, SCANTECH obtains a 0.05µm standard deviation on jumbo rolls of 20µm BIAX film.

The principle of Low Energy X-Ray Transmission Technology is similar to other transmission technologies (Beta, UV, IR). The measurement is accomplished by comparing the received signal, with (I) / or without (I0) a web between transmitter and receiver.

The ratio I/I0 measures the amount of material between the heads, which is equivalent to thickness, if the density is constant

The specific properties of the interaction of X-Rays with material, in combination with the know-how and advanced technology used by SCANTECH, offer the following benefits :

Safe technology
No radioactive material.

Excellent streak resolution
As a result of measurement speed, even narrow details of less than 1mm width such as gauge bands are measurable.

High dynamic measurement range with only one sensor tuning
The usual adjustment for plastic film is suitable for a range from 3 to 2000µm. Combined with measurement speed, this provides an accurate reading of film edges on a bi-oriented film line. This is of prime interest for an accurate profile control.

Perfect reading of the film thickness profile after the first scan

Flutter effect

Film flutter between transmitter and receiver does not affect the measurement.

X/Y stability

The measurement is quite insensible to misalignments between transmitter and receiver, thus reducing the frequency of maintenance operations.

Z stability
The SCANTECH sensor is equipped with a build-in device for the measurement of transmitter / receiver distance. Therefore, it is not influenced by frame deformation, in particular when the frame is opened to ease the film introduction.

Temperature insensibility
The sensor can withstand temperature variations of up to 40°C from one point of the web to another with a line speed up to 400m/min, without influence on the measurements.

Environment
The SCANTECH sensor is neither influenced by temperature, pressure, moisture variation, nor by aggressive environments (dust, fiber). The produced measurements are perfectly repeatable over time.

Measurement precision and response time
The method gives an excellent measurement precision with response times as short as 1msec.

Measurable materials
Most flat materials can be measured, transparent or opaque.

Duration of life
The average lifetime of the transmitter typically reaches 10 years.
